My Story
Zhenhan "Fred" Ma is a graduate student in the Sustainable Polymers Research Lab (SPRL) at Toronto Metropolitan University. His research focuses on the development of natural pigment-based pH indicators using polymer films for intelligent medical packaging. He is particularly enthusiastic about innovative polymer design and its applications in sustainable materials.
Fred earned his B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering from McMaster University, where he gained experience in polymer processing, sustainable product development, and early-stage startup company construction. At SPRL, he contributes to advancing biodegradable smart materials by incorporating betalain pigments and essential oils into PLA matrices, aiming to improve pharmaceutical safety and reduce environmental impact.
Outside the lab, Fred is actively engaged in sustainability education, science communication, and global environmental affairs—with a strong interest in how these issues intersect with geopolitical conflicts and historical legacies.
